About the Hālau

Hālau Kamawaelualani is a waihona, a living repository, for the wisdom and history of Hawaiʻi that has been carefully preserved by practitioners of hula for generations. We are dedicated to honoring and perpetuating our rich cultural heritage through hula by cultivating and nurturing a community of life-long learners. By embracing and incorporating traditional foundational values like aloha (compassion), akahai (kindness), haʻahaʻa (humbleness), and ʻohana (family), our hālau offers students of all ages an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture, language, and community through the lens of hula. Members of our hālau are provided with resources and opportunities to strengthen their relationships to both place and people, positively affecting their individual well-being and their interactions with their communities.

Sense of place is a critical keystone to any cultural practice and our name reflects this. Kamawaelualani is an ancient name for Kauaʻi, our home island and anchor. Through it we express our commitment to this island, its unique traditions, and vibrant community. By honoring ancestral customs and inspiring a strong foundation of place-based knowledge, Hālau Kamawaelualani endeavors to foster practitioners that will contribute in a meaningful way to the dynamic and ever-evolving art of hula.
